Professor Stephen Gorard serves as Director of the Evidence Centre for Education at Durham University and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He holds the position of Professor of Education and Public Policy within the School of Education, where he has been active since 2013.
Professor Gorard's research focuses on the robust evaluation of education systems with particular emphasis on issues of equity and improvement. His methodological expertise spans statistical analysis, research design, and evidence-based policy evaluation. He is particularly known for challenging conventional wisdom about educational structures through rigorous empirical research, demonstrating that academy schools show no advantage over traditional schools in raising attainment, and that private schools' apparent success stems primarily from student intake characteristics rather than superior educational practices.
His extensive publication record shows consistent trends toward evaluating educational interventions, teacher workforce issues, school funding mechanisms, and policies aimed at reducing the socioeconomic attainment gap. His research consistently emphasizes the importance of considering student background factors when evaluating school effectiveness.

His work has significantly influenced education policy discussions in the UK and internationally.
