Stephen Gibson is a Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, where he holds key administrative roles including Associate Executive Dean (Research & Impact), Director of Doctoral Programmes, and Chair of the Research Ethics Committee. He previously served at York St John University (2005–2019). His research focuses on obedience, identity & citizenship, and peace/conflict representations, employing discursive and rhetorical approaches. Notably, he has conducted extensive analyses of Stanley Milgram’s obedience experiments, emphasizing their rhetorical dimensions.
Educated at Lancaster University, he holds a PhD (2006), MSc in Psychological Research Methods (2002), and BSc in Psychology (2001). He is an active editor and reviewer, serving as Joint Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Social Psychology (2020–2022) and a member of the ESRC Peer Review College since 2010. His teaching contributions include co-authoring Doing Your Qualitative Psychology Project, a key textbook for qualitative research methods.
Gibson’s work bridges social psychology with critical discourse analysis, emphasizing the role of language in shaping social processes. His recent award, the 2025 Heriot-Watt Student Union Teaching Oscar for Best PhD Supervisor, reflects his dedication to mentorship. He frequently presents on topics like methodological transparency, obedience studies, and discursive peace psychology, contributing to both academic and public discourse on these issues.
