Marc Alexander is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the Doctoral Centre and member of the Centre for Applied Behavioural Sciences. His teaching focuses on Qualitative Social Research Methods at postgraduate and doctoral levels. Prior roles include Teaching Fellow at Keele University and Research Fellow at Loughborough University, where he earned a PhD in Discursive Psychology/Conversation Analysis, alongside a Master's and Bachelor's in Psychology. His research employs conversation analysis to study telephone helpline interactions in mediation, housing, and police services, emphasizing practical applications like the Conversation Analytic Roleplay Method (CARM).
Research interests include institutional communication, vulnerability assessment in helpline support, and formulating social problems. Notable awards include the 2014 Award for Undergraduate Psychology and a 2019 ESRC-funded fellowship. He actively co-supervises PhD students and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through his work on social interaction and service provision.
