Stephen Dugdale is an Associate Professor in the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds a BSc and MSc from Durham University, followed by a PhD from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), Canada. His research focuses on remote sensing, river processes, and climate change impacts, with expertise in thermal infrared imagery, drone-based data acquisition, and hydrological modeling. Current research themes include river temperature dynamics, fluvial ecosystems, and geospatial approaches to environmental monitoring.
- Education: BSc (Durham), MSc (Durham), PhD (INRS, Canada)
- Experience: Postdoctoral fellowships at Canadian Rivers Institute and University of Birmingham; joined Nottingham in 2018.
Dr. Dugdale teaches advanced courses on river management, environmental modeling, and remote sensing. His work integrates remote sensing technologies with hydrological models to address climate change challenges, particularly in salmonid habitats and subarctic river systems. He has contributed to global initiatives on river temperature monitoring and AI-driven environmental analysis.
Notable research areas include thermal refuge identification, river restoration ecology, and the application of machine learning to geospatial data. His publications span journals like Remote Sensing of Environment, Water Resources Research, and Nature Water.
