Karem Chokmani is a Full Professor at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), affiliated with the Water, Earth and Environment Research Centre. He leads the Environmental Remote Sensing by Drone Laboratory and the Environmental and Nordic Remote Sensing Laboratory. His work bridges geomatics, hydrology, and environmental monitoring using remote sensing technologies.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Geomatics Sciences, Université Laval
- M.Sc. in Rural Engineering, Université Laval
- Diploma in Agricultural Engineering, National Institute of Agronomy of Tunis
- Certificate in Business Administration, Université Laval
Research Interests: Professor Chokmani's research integrates in situ observations, statistical modeling, and geomatics tools to monitor water resources. His expertise lies in remote sensing applications for hydrology, including flood risk, snow and ice dynamics, and water quality. He explores electromagnetic interactions with freshwater in all states and develops algorithms for monitoring the hydrological cycle. His work emphasizes drone-based hyperspectral imaging and satellite data analysis.
Publication Trends: His recent publications reflect a strong focus on machine learning, UAV/drone applications, and satellite remote sensing for environmental monitoring. Key themes include flood mapping, ice jam prediction, water quality (turbidity, chlorophyll-a), agricultural water use, and lithological classification. The integration of cloud computing (e.g., Google Earth Engine) and deep learning models is prominent.
Scientific Awards:
- No specific awards listed in the provided text.
Advising and Grants: He actively supervises a large team of doctoral and master’s students, as well as postdoctoral researchers. His research is funded by major agencies including NSERC, Defence Canada, Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), Canadian Space Agency, and Public Safety Quebec. His projects address real-world challenges in flood management, precision agriculture, and climate change adaptation.
Labs and Teams: He directs two key laboratories focused on environmental remote sensing using drones and northern environments. His research team includes research associates, agents, and numerous graduate students working on diverse projects related to hydrology, agriculture, and cryospheric science.
