Stephen Clickard serves as Professor of Music at Bloomsburg University, appointed in 1998. He directs the BU Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band while teaching undergraduate courses in conducting, jazz history, jazz improvisation, music education, and brass instruction.
Education:
- D.M.A. in Instrumental Conducting from University of Washington
- M.M. in Orchestral and Wind Conducting from University of Northern Colorado
- B.A. in Music Performance (Jazz) from San Jose State University
His research focuses on jazz performance pedagogy, wind ensemble conducting techniques, and experiential learning methodologies. Dr. Clickard emphasizes student mentorship through ensemble direction and career advisement, with notable contributions to jazz education literature and professional development initiatives.
He received the inaugural Evans Fellowship for outstanding student advisement and support of experiential learning, which directly enabled the 2016 CD project DANÇA DO PAPAGAIO by The Clickard Consortium 'Little Big Band.' This faculty-student collaboration utilized Bloomsburg's professional recording studio and involved Audio/Video Recording majors in production.
Professional leadership includes past presidency of the International Association for Jazz Education’s Pennsylvania Unit and California Music Educator’s Association – Central Coast Section. He formerly administered the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Summer Jazz Camp and contributed to A Composer’s Insight – Volumes I and III, demonstrating sustained engagement with national jazz education communities.
