Stephen C. Lubkemann is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at George Washington University. A sociocultural anthropologist, his research focuses on social and political change in conflict-affected regions, diasporas, humanitarian action, and cultural heritage. He conducts fieldwork in Mozambique, South Africa, Angola, Liberia, and among African diasporas in Europe and the U.S.
Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology from Brown University.
Research Interests: Lubkemann examines displacement diasporas' political influence, trans-generational displacement effects, and informal governance systems in post-conflict societies. His work critiques international humanitarian structures and explores diasporas as a 'third humanitarian space.' He also studies maritime archaeology and CRM (cultural resource management), alongside methodological debates in social sciences.
Grants & Projects: Supported by the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation. Current projects include Liberian customary legal practices and Angola's trans-generational displacement impacts on urbanization.
Labs/Teams: Engaged in interdisciplinary research collaborations focusing on post-conflict societies and diaspora dynamics.
