Dr McDowell’s research centers on forced migration, involuntary resettlement, climate change-related displacement, and the ethical dimensions of refugee research. His work critically examines the socio-political impacts of development and conflict-induced displacement, with a strong focus on livelihood reconstruction and integration outcomes. He has published widely on diaspora politics, particularly among Sri Lankan Tamils in Europe, and on the intersections between asylum, security, and extremism.
His recent publications reflect a sustained engagement with climate-induced displacement, media representation of refugees, and transnational diaspora politics. Key themes include the governance of resettlement, ethical research practices, and the policy implications of refugee integration in host societies. His work often bridges academic scholarship and policy application, particularly through collaborations with UN agencies and national governments.
- Edgar Graham Book Prize 2013 – Awarded to Displaced: The Human Cost of Development and Resettlement by SOAS Department of Development Studies

He has supervised doctoral students and welcomes new PhD candidates working on asylum, forced migration, and political anthropology. He has served as Associate Dean and Head of Department, demonstrating strong leadership in academic administration.
He is actively involved in advisory roles, including membership in the UK Home Office Qualitative Evaluation Steering Group, the Counter Terrorism Advisory Group (Metropolitan Police), and the Academic Advisory Committee at Hohai University’s National Research Center for Resettlement in China. His research has informed policy on resettlement, integration, and security in the context of migration.
