B. Christine McDowell is an Associate Professor of Theater at Bates College, where she has served since 2005. Her roles include costume and set designer, and she teaches courses such as Introduction to Design and Senior Thesis. She holds an MFA in design from the Yale School of Drama (1991) and has extensive professional experience in theater and dance design across regional, national, and international stages.
Her expertise spans costume design, set design, historical clothing reconstruction, and material culture studies. Notable projects include designing for The Virginia Shakespeare Festival, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, and international collaborations in Japan, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. She has also worked with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and contributed to a film addressing displaced minority women in Sri Lanka with a Bates graduate.
McDowell's research extends beyond design to historical clothing and material culture. She is affiliated with Museum L-A in Lewiston, focusing on local history and industry. Her teaching emphasizes visual storytelling in theater, integrating technical skills with creative expression.
