Dr. Paolo Gaibazzi is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin, specializing in African migrations, border regimes, and Muslim subjectivities. His work bridges West and Southern Africa with the Mediterranean region, focusing on Gambian, Senegalese, and Angolan contexts.
- Education: PhD in Anthropology of the Contemporary World (University of Milano-Bicocca, 2010), MSc in Visual Anthropology (University of Oxford, 2005), BA in Social Anthropology (University of Kent at Canterbury, 2002).
His research explores the interplay between mobility and immobility, trade diasporas in Angola’s boom economy, and post-slavery dynamics. He has contributed extensively to debates on fate, fortune, and labor in African economies through edited volumes and peer-reviewed articles.
Recent publications examine West African Muslim trade networks in Angola, visa regimes in the Gambia, and post-slavery identity in Gambian life stories. He has convened panels at major conferences, including the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) and European Conference on African Studies (ECAS).
