Dr. Esteban Salas is a Lecturer in African History at the Department of History, part of the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS University of London. His academic work focuses on West Central African societies and the historical impacts of the Atlantic slave trade.
- PhD in African History, University of Notre Dame
- Postdoctoral Associate, Program in Agrarian Studies at Yale University
His research explores themes of freedom, autonomy, refuge-making, slavery, labor systems, racial thinking, and early colonialism in Angola, supported by grants from institutions like the Luso-American Foundation, MacMillan Center, Kellogg Institute, and Nanovic Institute. His recent publication, Refuge-Making in West Central Africa: The Other Side of the Age of Revolutions (2023), reflects his interdisciplinary approach to Atlantic history. Scientific awards include:
