Cathrine Brun is Professor and Director of the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University. She leads interdisciplinary research on humanitarianism, forced migration, urban resilience, and displacement, with a focus on ethics, temporality, and spatial dynamics in protracted crises. Her work bridges academia and practice, collaborating with NGOs and policymakers in Lebanon, Jordan, Uganda, Sri Lanka, and Norway. Her research interests include: Forced migration and protracted displacement Humanitarian ethics and politics Housing and home in crisis contexts Youth and education in displacement Participatory and real-time research methodologies Urban conflict and self-recovery Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in critical humanitarian studies, emphasizing relational approaches, temporal injustice, and the lived experiences of displaced populations. She frequently publishes in journals such as Journal of Humanitarian Affairs , Geoforum , and Refuge . She has received significant research funding from ESRC, EPSRC, NORDFORSK, and the Research Council of Norway for projects on: Relational humanitarianism in protracted crises EU migration governance in Africa and the Middle East Self-recovery housing and crisis preparedness Education-to-employment trajectories for refugee youth in Lebanon and Jordan She supervises several PhD students and teaches in the online Master’s programs in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) and Humanitarian Action and Peacebuilding (HAP). She previously held a professorship at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where she was Director of Research and Director of the Norwegian Researcher School for Geography. She is actively engaged in public scholarship through blog posts, policy papers, and invited keynotes at international conferences.
