Stephen Burt is a Professor of Art in the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of New England. He holds a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design (1987) and an M.F.A. from SUNY Purchase (1991). His work focuses on painting and printmaking, emphasizing improvisatory techniques and exploration of color and form. Burt’s art has been exhibited internationally, including at the Bristol Art Museum, Zero Station, and the Aomori Municipal Art Pavilion. His works are part of prestigious collections like the Fogg Museum (Harvard), Portland Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.
Recipient of major awards such as the 2024 Ludcke Chair Award and grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Burt is also a member of the Peregrine Press in Portland, Maine. Recent projects include the 2024 exhibition Unconscious, featuring ink wash techniques, and the video work There Were Many (2022).
