Dr. Stephen Bowman is a Lecturer in Modern British History at the University of Stirling's Department of History & Politics. His research focuses on Scotland's transatlantic cultural and political connections, particularly with the US, emphasizing historical memory and Anglo-American relations. He has held roles at several UK and Scottish institutions, including Durham University and the University of the Highlands and Islands. Bowman earned his undergraduate and master's degrees at Stirling and his PhD at Northumbria University in 2014.
His notable works include the 2018 book The Pilgrims Society and Public Diplomacy, 1895-1945 (Edinburgh University Press), analyzing British-American elite networks, and a 2024 creative oral history film on the pandemic, recognized by the British Records Association. He leads the Creative Histories Research Group and serves on the History UK Steering Committee.
Research interests span transatlantic historiographies, John Paul Jones's cultural memory, and creative historical methodologies. His grants include support from the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his John Paul Jones project. Awards include the 2013 Donald Cameron Watt Prize.
