Dr. Tom Turpie is a Lecturer at the University of Stirling and a Teaching Assistant at the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Centre for History. He also works as a freelance historical consultant, collaborating on projects such as the Declaration of Arbroath (2020), Dunfermline guidebook, and the Fife Pilgrim Way (2016). His research focuses on later medieval and early Renaissance Scotland, particularly social, religious, and political structures, saint cults, and responses to environmental and health crises like plague and climate stress.
Education: BA from the University of Stirling (2005), MSc in Medieval History (Edinburgh), and a PhD exploring saints’ cults in late medieval Scotland. He has contributed to interdisciplinary projects including the Family Names UK Project (2013–2014) and burgh surveys in Fife (2016–2020).
Research interests include the dynamics of pre-modern Scottish society, how communities adapted to crises, and the evolution of saint veneration. His work bridges academic and public history through accessible publications and collaborative projects.
