Associate Professor Stephen Anderson is a physiologist and educational leader at the University of Queensland's School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences. With expertise in endocrinology, he has taught physiology to over 40,000 students across multiple health disciplines and serves as Director of Teaching and Learning (reappointed in April 2025).

Stephen's research focuses on the regulation of metabolism, growth, appetite, and reproduction through hormonal mechanisms. His primary physiological research investigates phosphorus deficiency in Australian cattle, examining how maternal bone stores are drawn upon during pregnancy and lactation. Complementing this, his educational research explores how students engage with complexity and uncertainty in developing advanced understanding of physiology, with a focus on 21st century skills like creativity, critical thinking, and metacognition. His work bridges veterinary, biomedical, and educational sciences, with significant contributions to both animal health and pedagogical practices.
His recent publications reveal a dual research trajectory: continuing investigations into bone mineral metabolism (particularly phosphorus dynamics in cattle) while expanding his educational scholarship on complexity understanding in biomedical students.
