Stéphane Boyer is a Professor at the University of Tours, France, and the leader of the ANR-funded IMAgHO project. He holds a position at the UMR CNRS 7261 Research Institute on Insect Biology (IRBI) within the UFR of Sciences and Techniques. His research focuses on animal interactions in agricultural and natural environments, biodiversity conservation, and molecular ecology tools. Boyer leads major projects such as IMAgHO (enhancing agroecosystem multifunctionality), ARCCADIE (agroforestry and climate change impacts), and COBALT (biological control in agroforestry). He co-founded the peer-reviewed journal Rethinking Ecology and chairs the joint scientific committee for sections 67/68 at Tours University.
His academic journey includes roles as Associate Professor at UNITEC (New Zealand), Senior Lecturer at UNITEC, and teaching positions at universities in New Zealand, Belgium, and France. He pioneered initiatives like the ENTOMOBLITZ participatory science event and the whitebait DNA diagnostic project. His work bridges ecological theory with practical applications, emphasizing molecular tools for biodiversity assessment and conservation.
Key contributions include advancing DNA metabarcoding for pest detection, studying invasive species impacts, and promoting agroecological practices. Projects like INFOBIOS involve global forest biodiversity monitoring via environmental DNA (eDNA). Boyer’s outreach efforts include school-based conservation projects (e.g., Wētā Watchers) and workshops in the South Pacific. His research spans ecology, conservation biology, and molecular genetics, with a focus on translating scientific findings into actionable conservation strategies.
