Stephan Barthel is a Professor of Geospatial Information Science at the University of Gävle. His research focuses on green cities, civil society's role in climate transformation, and the resilience of socio-ecological systems in urban landscapes. He leads challenge-driven programs integrating trans-disciplinary collaborations with non-academic actors.
Education: PhD in Ecology (2008) from Stockholm University, with a focus on urban ecosystem services and social-ecological memory. Active in international networks like Mistra Urban Futures and FAIRTRANS.
Research interests include urban sustainability, climate policy acceptance, nature-based solutions, and the interplay between urban form and mental health. He emphasizes participatory approaches, such as community gardens and campus design projects like Campus Albano.
Recent work explores energy policy design, fairness in carbon taxation, and the role of digitalization in climate transitions. His studies often bridge environmental science with urban planning, emphasizing social equity and resilience.
Labs/Teams: Core member of FAIRTRANS (Fair Climate Transformation), collaborating with Stockholm Resilience Centre and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Leads projects on urban commons, smart cities, and hybrid infrastructure resilience.
