Sten Eirik Jacobsen is a Professor/Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet, holding dual appointments in the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, and the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. His research focuses on hematopoietic stem cell biology, exploring both normal blood formation and malignant transformations in diseases like leukemia. He leads the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology Group, investigating mechanisms of stem cell differentiation and therapeutic targeting of cancer stem cells.
His research interests include stem cell hierarchy, lineage restriction, and the molecular drivers of leukemia. He collaborates internationally, including with the University of Oxford’s MRC Molecular Haematology Unit. Jacobsen has received notable awards, such as the Wallenberg Scholar (2024) and Torsten Söderberg Academy Professor Prize, and has secured funding from the Swedish Research Council and Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.
Recent work highlights include identifying platelet-biased stem cell subtypes, tracking relapse-initiating leukemia stem cells, and developing T-cell therapies targeting cancer mutations. His lab’s publications span high-impact journals like *Nature*, *Cancer Cell*, and *Blood*, reflecting contributions to both basic science and translational medicine.
