Hong Qian is a Professor of Molecular Hematology at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. She leads the Leukemia Niche Group at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM). Her research focuses on understanding the role of the hematopoietic niche in myeloid leukemia progression and drug resistance. She holds a Ph.D. in Stem Cell Biology from Lund University (2007) and completed a postdoc at Linköping University (2008–2011). Before becoming a Professor in 2024, she served as an Assistant Professor (2012), Senior Investigator (2016), and Associate Professor (2022).
Research interests include leukemia stem cell biology, bone marrow and skin niches, and developing novel therapeutic strategies. Techniques used include flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, and mouse models. Teaching includes advanced courses on cancer stem cells and hematological diagnostics. Key collaborations involve Nordic institutions and international experts in leukemia research.
Grants include funding from the Swedish Cancer Society, Swedish Research Council, and Childhood Cancer Fund. The lab has trained numerous students and postdocs, many of whom have pursued academic careers. Notable achievements include identifying skin niches as reservoirs for AML stem cells and discovering CXCL14 as a therapeutic target in CML.
