معرفی
Professor Stella Valenzuela is a distinguished academic at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), holding positions as Professor in the School of Life Sciences and Director of the ARC IDEAL Hub. She leads research in bionanotechnology, ion channel proteins, and biomedical device development, particularly focusing on CLIC proteins and tethered membrane technologies. Her work bridges academic research with industry through collaborations with Surgical Diagnostics Pty Ltd, aiming to create innovative diagnostic tools and medical devices.
Prof Valenzuela completed her PhD in cell and molecular biology at UNSW, studying macrophage-activated genes. Her prior industry experience in biotechnology companies shaped her translational research focus. She has served as Head of School and Associate Head (Research) at UTS, demonstrating leadership in academic administration. Current projects include developing rapid antigen tests using upconversion nanoparticles and exploring nanomedicine applications for neurodegenerative diseases.
Her research spans disciplines such as membrane biophysics, protein engineering, and nanomaterials. Notable contributions include elucidating CLIC proteins' roles in oxidative stress and membrane interactions, as well as advancing gold nanoparticle applications in metabolic disease treatment.
Prof Valenzuela is affiliated with the Institute for Biomedical Materials and Devices, and previously with the Institute of Nanoscale Technologies. She coordinates the Bionanotechnology course and contributes to teaching in cell biology, neuroscience, and biotechnology. Her work exemplifies the integration of fundamental science with practical biomedical solutions.
