Stefano Cattelan is an Adjunct Professor at the Brussels School of Governance, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and a Postdoctoral Researcher. His work focuses on legal and diplomatic history, particularly the Law of the Sea, neutrality, and international relations in the 15th–18th centuries. He leads the FWO-funded project 'In the Shadow of the Great Powers: Freedom of the Sea and Neutrality in the Long Eighteenth Century' (2022–2024). Cattelan has published extensively on maritime sovereignty, early modern diplomacy, and the evolution of international law, including his monograph Mare Clausum (Brill, 2025) and chapters in the Cambridge History of International Law.
Research interests span pre-modern maritime legal doctrines, state practices, and the interplay of neutrality with imperial and small-power diplomacy. Notable contributions include analyses of Venetian dominion over the Adriatic, French neutrality strategies during the Nine Years' War, and the role of piracy in shaping European maritime norms.
