Dr. Stefan Symeonides is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology at the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Genetics and Cancer, where he serves as Principal Investigator and ECMC Deputy Lead. He works across the CRUK Edinburgh Centre, MRC Institute of Genetics & Molecular Medicine, and Edinburgh Cancer Centre (NHS Lothian), bridging laboratory research and clinical application in cancer therapeutics.
His research focuses on novel therapeutic discovery and development, with particular expertise in cancer immunology and combination immunotherapies. He leads the Edinburgh Cancer Immunology Research Network and the Phase I Trials Unit at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, with a specialty focus on renal cancers within the Uro-oncology team. His work spans cytotoxic agents, small molecules, metabolic therapies, and psychological approaches, though immunotherapies represent his primary research focus.
Dr. Symeonides' recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on combination approaches in cancer treatment, particularly FAK and PD-1 inhibition, cancer vaccine development, and biomarker identification for immunotherapy response. His research shows consistent translational focus, moving discoveries from the lab to clinical application across multiple cancer types.
Among his notable recognitions is the CSO Clinician Scientist Fellowship. His collaborative network spans multiple UK institutions including the University of Glasgow, University of Southampton, University of Leicester, and Queen's University Belfast.
As Principal Investigator, he leads multiple active research projects including the MICA phase II trial examining Bermekimab effects, and serves as Co-investigator on several CRUK-funded initiatives focused on immunotherapy response prediction and sarcoma drug development. His work maintains strong industry connections with Cancer Research UK's Centre for Drug Development, MSD, Verastem, and various UK biotech companies.
