Stefan Kaufman is a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University’s Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), specifically within the BehaviourWorks Australia (BWA) group. He holds a PhD and B.Sc./B.A. (Hons 1) in Human Ecology from the Australian National University (2009). He joined BWA in 2019 after leading the social science function at the Victorian EPA (2007–2018), focusing on regulatory performance, risk communication, and voluntary behavior change programs. His research emphasizes sustainability transitions, environmental behavior change, and integrating voluntary/compliance drivers for systemic change. He has led multiple projects on circular economy, climate adaptation, and natural capital, collaborating internationally (e.g., Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Germany, 2019).
Key roles include Primary Chief Investigator for initiatives like the Sustainable Food for Victorian Patients project (2025–2026) and the Environmental Markets Leadership Program (2021–2025). He has co-authored over 38 peer-reviewed publications, including works on socio-technical systems, conservation frameworks, and circular economy behaviors. His 2023 award recognized contributions to industry transformation via behavioral science education.
Teaching and training span Monash, RMIT, and the University of Melbourne, alongside designing programs like ANZOG’s GreenSteps. He actively participates in global forums (e.g., Lund University Planet 2050 Symposium) and is a member of AELERT, Society for Human Ecology, and the Australasian Evaluation Society.
