Stefan Kartman is a Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) and chairs the string area. He is also a faculty member at The String Academy of Wisconsin, the state’s premier pre-college string training program. His expertise spans cello performance, chamber music, and pedagogy. He holds a DMA from Rutgers University, an MM and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School, and a BM from Northwestern University.
Dr. Kartman is a recording artist and pedagogue, having published editions of Beethoven’s works and a teaching method. He has performed globally with ensembles like Trio Antigo and the Florestan Duo, delivering masterclasses at institutions such as the Cleveland Institute of Music and China Conservatory of Music. He has served as artistic director of the Milwaukee Chamber Music Festival and participated in renowned festivals including the Vianden Chamber Music Festival and Garth Newel Chamber Music Festival. His pedagogical heritage includes mentorship under Harvey Shapiro, Zara Nelsova, and Bernard Greenhouse.
His research and teaching focus on cello technique, chamber music collaboration, and classical repertoire interpretation. He has collaborated with members of prestigious quartets such as the Guarneri and Juilliard String Quartets.
