Dr. Stavros Makris is a Lecturer in Law at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the Faculty of Laws. Previously, he held roles at the University of Glasgow, London School of Economics (LSE), Wageningen University, and Sciences Po. His expertise spans competition law, digital markets, sustainability integration, and EU law. He holds a PhD in Competition Law from the European University Institute and has earned distinctions in multiple LLM programs.
Research focuses on how competition law interacts with economic knowledge, legal reasoning, and societal needs, particularly in digital markets and sustainability. He has pioneered frameworks for incorporating sustainability into merger control and explores enforcement challenges in dynamic economies. Key awards include the Valentine Korah Prize (2013), ASCOLA Best Junior Paper Award (2023), and Concurrences Antitrust Writing Award (2024).
Publications address Smithian economic principles in modern competition law, agri-food market regulation, and innovation competition in digital markets. He advises the Hellenic Competition Commission and serves on journal review boards. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, 12, 13, and 16.
