Star A. Muir is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University (GMU). He holds a B.A. from Wake Forest University (1980), an M.A. from the University of Central Florida (1982), and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh (1990). His research focuses on rhetoric and technology, public communication, and digital natives, exploring themes like attention, distractibility, and digital literacy in education and societal contexts.

Research Interests: Explores the intersection of technology and communication, particularly how digital natives navigate online environments. His work addresses privacy, identity, and teaching strategies for digital learners. Recent interests include the attention economy’s impact on democracy and critical thinking in education.

Advising & Grants: Supervised at least one dissertation: Barry McManus’ A Curriculum Structured Design for Educating Adults in Detecting Deception and Eliciting Information (2013). His work in educational media and IT training has received grant support for workshops at institutions like the CDC and NIH.
Labs & Affiliations: Affiliated with GMU’s Communication, Health, and Relational Media (CHARM) Lab and served as NCA President. Previously directed GMU’s Learning Support Services in IT, overseeing 22 staff to enhance faculty/staff IT literacy.
