Dr. April Mattix Foster is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at George Mason University's College of Education and Human Development. She joined the faculty in 2012, teaching courses in elementary education, literacy, children's literature, and international education. Her academic background includes a PhD in Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of Pittsburgh, an MAT in Elementary Education from Chatham University, an MA in International Affairs, and a BA in History and Political Science from Saint Francis University.
Her research focuses on literacy education, global competence, and anti-racism pedagogy, particularly through children's literature. She explores how stories can bridge cultural divides and foster inclusive classrooms, with emphases on Indigenous literature authenticity, intercultural communication, and teacher advocacy for multilingual learners.
Her publications consistently address literacy innovation, social justice education, and global citizenship, with recent works examining anti-racism frameworks and international school practices. Awards highlight her teaching excellence, including GMU's 2023 Online Teaching Excellence Award and 2017 Teaching Excellence Award.
