Dr Srikanth Bellary is a Reader in Metabolic Medicine at Aston University and Honorary Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He leads the Diabetes Renal Service and holds multiple NHS leadership roles, including Chair of the Diabetes Clinical Network Group, Secondary Care Lead for Diabetes at Birmingham and Solihull ICB, and Research Lead for Diabetes at the West Midlands Regional Research Delivery Network. His clinical expertise focuses on obesity, diabetic kidney disease, and innovative diabetes care models.
Dr Bellary holds advanced qualifications including an FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians, an MD from the University of Birmingham, and a MBBS from Osmania University, India. His research spans epidemiology of type 2 diabetes, diabetic kidney disease, and novel therapies, with leadership in trials like the UK Asian Diabetes Study and EU-led frailty studies. He serves on high-profile committees including NIHR Research For Patient Benefit and UK Kidney Association-ABCD committees.
His research outputs emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing gaps in diabetes management through studies on obesity, sleep patterns, and tiered healthcare approaches. He actively contributes to academic publishing as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism and editorial roles at BMC Endocrine Disorders and the British Journal of Diabetes.
Dr Bellary’s work integrates clinical practice and research, advocating for equitable access to specialist care through initiatives like bariatric surgery mapping and community diabetes care innovations.
