Sowah Mensah is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas and Macalester College, where he teaches African Music Ensemble and directs both institutions' ensembles. He also serves as a James Marsh Professor-at-Large at the University of Vermont. A renowned ethnomusicologist and Master Drummer from Ghana, Mensah specializes in West African musical traditions, blending performance, education, and cultural preservation. His work emphasizes Ghanian folklore through music and dance.
He leads Sankofa, a Ghanaian Folklore and Dance Ensemble in the Twin Cities, and collaborates with Speaking in Tongues, a multicultural musical group. Mensah has extensive teaching experience in Ghana and Nigeria, and his courses focus on traditional African music performance, including chants, social/festive music, and instrumental techniques.
