Sophie Lecheler is a Full Professor of Political Communication at the Department of Communication, University of Vienna, Austria. Previously, she held tenured positions as Associate Professor (2014–2016) and Assistant Professor (2010–2014) at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam. She also served as a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (2013–2014). Her research focuses on political communication, digital journalism, social media, framing effects, and emotion in politics.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2010), an MPhil in Contemporary European Studies from the University of Cambridge (2006), and a Master’s in Mass Communication from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (2005).
Her work explores topics like fake news, mediated incivility, and news framing through experimental and qualitative methods. Notable contributions include frameworks for analyzing fake news and integrating emotions into communication studies. She serves on editorial boards of journals such as Political Communication and Human Communication Research, and leads the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences (ViDSS).
