Claes de Vreese

Claes de Vreese is Professor at the University of Southern Denmark and Distinguished University Professor of AI & Society at the University of Amsterdam, where he also holds the Chair of Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). He is the founding Scientific Director of the Digital Democracy Centre at SDU and a member of the Danish Institute for Advanced Studies.

His research centers on the role of media, technology, digitalization, and artificial intelligence in democratic processes. He investigates media effects on public opinion, framing in political campaigns, and the implications of algorithmic systems for democratic governance. His work bridges communication science, political science, and data ethics.

His leadership includes founding the Center for Politics and Communication (CPC) at UvA and serving as President of the International Communication Association (ICA) from 2020 to 2021. He co-directs the national AlgoSoc research program and the Information, Communication & the Data Society (ICDS) initiative at UvA.

He is affiliated with leading research groups such as the Digital Communication Methods Lab and has played a key role in maintaining UvA’s Communication & Media Studies program as the top-ranked in the QS World University Rankings.
