Claes de Vreese is a Distinguished University Professor of AI & Society at the University of Amsterdam, holding the Chair of Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). He co-directs the AI, Media & Democracy Lab and the AlgoSoc national research program, and serves as founding director of the Digital Democracy Center at SDU. Previously, he led the Center for Politics and Communication and co-directs initiatives like Human(e) AI and the Digital Communication Methods Lab. His research focuses on media’s role in democracy, public opinion, electoral behavior, and the societal impacts of AI and data-driven technologies.
De Vreese has held leadership roles including President of the International Communication Association (2020-2021) and Editor of Political Communication. He has been recognized with the David Swanson Career Achievement Award for institutional contributions to the field. His work bridges academia and policy, addressing challenges like misinformation, algorithmic governance, and democratic resilience in the digital era.
He advises on grants such as the NWO-M initiative and collaborates internationally through programs like the Netherlands Media Pluralism Monitor. His labs and teams focus on interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and shaping technology’s societal impact. Current projects explore AI ethics, political communication dynamics, and the future of democratic processes in algorithmic societies.
