Sophie James is a Lecturer in Security and Protection Science at the Department of Marketing, Lancaster University Management School. Her work intersects digital anthropology, socio-technical cybersecurity, and consumer culture critique, with a focus on how online subcultures and extreme content shape trust in expert systems. She is affiliated with the Centre for Consumption Insights, Security Lancaster, and the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS).
Research interests include:
- Hauntology of digital systems
- Misinformation dynamics
- Socio-digital futures
- Consumer identity in cybersecurity
- Thanatourism and digital culture
- Policy interventions for online trust
Recent publications examine cyber dark tourism, archaisms in post-historical consumerism, and fetishistic disavowal in digital networks, blending Marxist theory, psychoanalysis, and critical marketing studies. Her 2024 doctoral thesis explores temporal contradictions in consumer culture.
