Sonja Teupen

Dr. Sonja Teupen serves as Group Leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Witten, where she heads research in health services methodology with a focus on dementia care. Her team supports projects from planning to publication while advancing methodological rigor in complex care environments.

Her research tackles unique challenges in dementia-specific nursing research: exploratory questions requiring mixed methods, work with vulnerable populations (people with dementia, caregivers, and nursing professionals), and analysis of non-representative samples with nominal/ordinal data. Key expertise includes:

• Adapting quantitative methods for small convenience samples and complex interventions
• Applying qualitative approaches to understand subjective dementia experiences and care dynamics
• Innovating research data management for sensitive qualitative data under strict data protection requirements

The group coordinates AI tool implementation in research and hosts the MethodenForum Witten for methodological exchange in dementia care research.
