Her work combines field expeditions with data analysis from reanalysis datasets and observational studies, focusing on how mid-latitude weather systems influence Arctic climate change. She has participated in the ACAS (Arctic Climate Across Scales) project studying atmospheric dynamics behind Arctic weather extremes and currently participates in the ARTofMELT expedition investigating how atmospheric rivers initiate sea ice melt.
Sonja previously worked at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) as an assistant forecaster, researcher, and oceanographer, where she specialized in digitalizing historical Baltic Sea ice charts. Her background combines meteorological theory with practical forecasting experience and oceanographic data analysis.
