Johan Nilsson is Professor of Meteorology at Stockholm University's Department of Meteorology (MISU), where he has been affiliated since 1997. His research focuses on large-scale ocean circulation and its impact on Earth's climate, with particular expertise in Arctic and Nordic Seas dynamics.
His research interests span several critical climate domains:
- Physical oceanography of the Arctic and Nordic Seas
- Overturning circulation systems and climate feedbacks
- Polar climate sensitivity and rapid change mechanisms
- Baltic Sea oceanography and coastal processes
- Glacial-interglacial ocean circulation transitions
Analysis of his recent publications reveals strong emphasis on Arctic freshwater dynamics, Atlantic Water pathways, and paleoceanographic reconstructions of ice-covered Arctic conditions. His research demonstrates how basin-scale circulation patterns respond to climate forcing across multiple timescales.
Nilsson actively participates in major Arctic research initiatives including the Ryder Glacier Expedition 2019 and the ECO2NORSE project monitoring Nordic Seas circulation. His work has significant implications for understanding climate change impacts on polar regions and global ocean circulation.
