Professor Kent Moore is a faculty member in the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). His research spans atmospheric physics, climate science, and oceanography, with a focus on high latitude climate dynamics, mountain meteorology, and high altitude physiology.
Moore employs theoretical, computational, and observational methods to study climate system dynamics, particularly the impact of topographic obstacles like Greenland and the Himalayas on regional climate. His fieldwork includes Arctic, Greenlandic, and Himalayan expeditions using automatic weather stations, research aircraft, and ships.
Recent publications highlight his work on Arctic sea ice dynamics, ocean-atmosphere interactions in polar regions, and climate change impacts on high-altitude environments. He also investigates the relationship between climate variables and public health outcomes, such as ozone levels in mountainous areas and heat-related mortality in the U.S.
Professor Moore teaches courses including PHY241H5 (Atmospheric Physics), PHY451H5 (Climate Dynamics), and graduate-level PHY2509H1 (Advanced Oceanography and Meteorology). He is part of international collaborations analyzing heat, moisture, and momentum exchanges between oceans and atmospheres, especially in regions with declining sea ice.
