Sonia Sabnis is a Professor of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Reed College since 2006, affiliated with the Division of Literature and Languages and the Humanities program. She holds a BA from Columbia University (1998), MA (2000) and PhD (2006) from University of California, Berkeley.
Her research focuses on imperial literature, Roman author Apuleius, slavery in antiquity, and reception of classical texts in modern contexts like Algerian novels and horror fiction. She has held research fellowships at Vassar College, Wellesley College, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Center. In 2024–25, she will lead the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. She volunteers as a mentor for the Asian and Asian American Classical Caucus (AAACC) and as a tour guide at the Portland Japanese Garden.
Her scholarly work explores intersections of Greco-Roman culture with modern narratives, emphasizing marginalized voices and cross-cultural exchanges. Key themes include mythological transformations, socio-political structures in antiquity, and literary symbolism in classical texts.
