Sonia Leber is an Adjunct Senior Industry Fellow at RMIT University's School of Art, based at the City Campus in Australia. Her interdisciplinary practice bridges visual arts, urban studies, and environmental research, with a particular focus on how artistic interventions can illuminate hidden spatial and ecological narratives within urban environments.
Leber's research interests span multiple interconnected domains:
- Urban and regional planning, with emphasis on hidden infrastructures and histories of cities
- Human geography, particularly the relationship between people, place, and identity
- Policy and administration, examining how spatial practices intersect with governance
- Sonic and visual arts as methodologies for understanding urban environments
- Indigenous perspectives on land and water management
- Environmental history and ecological memory embedded in urban landscapes
Her creative research demonstrates a consistent engagement with making visible the often-hidden layers of urban environments. Through sound installations, video works, and augmented reality experiences, Leber explores intersections of colonial histories, environmental processes, and contemporary urban life. A significant thread throughout her recent work has been the investigation of underground water systems and how they reveal complex ecological and cultural histories beneath modern cities.
Leber frequently collaborates with David Chesworth and various cultural institutions including the National Trust Australia, Boon Wurrung Foundation, and multiple contemporary art galleries across Australia. Her projects often involve community engagement and interdisciplinary partnerships that bridge artistic practice with environmental science and cultural heritage.
