Sonia Harmand is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stony Brook University's College of Arts and Sciences and affiliated with the Turkana Basin Institute. She specializes in Early Stone Age archaeology, focusing on the origins of hominin technology through lithic analysis.
- Education: PhD in Archaeology from University of Paris X (Paris Nanterre University).
Her research examines stone tool manufacturing and use dating back 3.3 million years, employing the chaîne opératoire approach. She conducts fieldwork in East Africa and investigates biomechanics of tool production and primate behavior models for technological evolution. Harmand leads the West Turkana Archaeological Project since 2012 and collaborates with international institutions like IFRA Nairobi and CNRS.
