Marine Frouin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University, where she leads the Luminescence Dating Research Laboratory. Her research focuses on developing and applying luminescence techniques to establish chronological frameworks for archaeological and geological materials. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bordeaux and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford and Technical University of Denmark before joining Stony Brook in 2020.
Her work emphasizes luminescence process understanding, extending dating methods to the Plio-Pleistocene, and investigating human evolution in Eurasia and Africa. Key projects include the chronology of Neanderthal burials (e.g., Shanidar Cave), Arabian Peninsula hominin expansions, and the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition in Georgia. She is affiliated with the Turkana Basin Institute and maintains a research associate role at the University of Oxford.
Frouin’s lab, established in 2022, employs state-of-the-art instrumentation to address unresolved questions in luminescence chronology. She actively mentors undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs in interdisciplinary research. Notable contributions include refining K-feldspar dating protocols, resolving technical artifacts in IR-RF measurements, and integrating multi-method luminescence approaches for complex archaeological deposits.
Her publications span luminescence technique validation, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and chronological studies of key hominin sites. Current research trends emphasize technological innovations in dating methods, high-altitude archaeological chronologies, and genetic-environmental interactions in Neanderthal populations.
Grants and collaborations include funding for lab equipment and international fieldwork. She is developing a new generation of dating protocols tailored to young sediments and arid environments, with applications to colonial-era and historical sites alongside prehistoric contexts.
