PD Dr. Solveig Malatrait is a Senior Lecturer in French and Italian Literature and Cultural Studies at the Institute of Romance Studies, Department of Language, Literature, Media II, Faculty of Humanities, University of Hamburg. Her academic career spans over two decades with teaching appointments at the University of Hamburg since 1999, a research position at the University of Rostock (2007-2009), and international collaborations with institutions in France, Romania, and Italy.
Dr. Malatrait's research focuses on French and Italian literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance within their cultural contexts, theater poetics and staging from cultural studies perspectives, dramatic communication, reception of antiquity (particularly ancient myth in modern French and Italian literature), contemporary novels in France and the Francophonie, translation as a European paradigm, and cultural contact phenomena. Her work bridges historical literary analysis with cultural studies approaches, particularly neohistorical perspectives on theater from the Renaissance to modern times.
Her scholarly contributions include significant research projects such as 'Aesthetics of Postmodernism: Surface and Intertext. Contemporary Novels' (since 2009), planning an Erasmus intensive program on European cultural identity (2009/2010), and a completed cultural study on 'Der Roman de Troie im Kontext der Kultur des 12. Jahrhunderts' (2008-2009). Her habilitation thesis 'Inszenierungen der Antike im Italien der Frühen Neuzeit. Genese und Wirkungsästhetik des gelehrten Theaters und die kulturellen Praktiken der Zeit' was submitted in 2007 and completed in 2008.
Her scientific recognition includes the Förderpreis der Dr. Helmut und Hannelore Greve-Stiftung für Wissenschaften und Kultur in 2000, awarded on the proposal of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences for her interdisciplinary dissertation on literary Amor discourses in French and Neo-Latin Renaissance lyric poetry.
Dr. Malatrait has supervised numerous theses across various academic levels, from Bachelor to Magister and Staatsexamen, with topics ranging from courtly love in 12th century literature to contemporary Francophone novels and film adaptations. She has also served as second reviewer for doctoral dissertations. Her teaching encompasses French and Italian literature and cultural studies across all historical periods, courses on French and Italian film, gender studies aspects, and French teaching methodology.
She maintains active international collaborations, including as delegate of the Institute of Romance Studies at University of Rostock to the Faculty of Letters at University of Cluj (2009), and as invited professor at the University of Bordeaux III. She is a member of the German Dante Society, German Romanist Association, and MIRA Network, and participates in the Gender Research Working Group at University of Rostock and the interdisciplinary Bruno Snell Working Group since 1999.
