Dr Sofya Dmitrieva is a historian of art and visual culture specializing in eighteenth-century France, affiliated with the Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford and St Edmund Hall as a Junior Research Fellow. Her research bridges genre theory, perception studies, and the history of art collections.
Her work at the Voltaire Foundation focuses on creating an open-access digital archive of Voltaire’s visual representations, building on Prof. Samuel Taylor’s collection. This project offers advanced tools to trace the evolution of Voltaire’s portraiture across media.

Her research explores the interplay between art and Enlightenment-era intellectual currents, particularly how genre painting and allegorical series reflected shifting perceptions of temporality and curiosity. She has contributed to critical publications on the French Royal Academy’s art collection and eighteenth-century French sculpture.
Her recent publications and projects highlight interdisciplinary approaches to art history, including collaborations on digital humanities initiatives and reproducible scholarship. She also engages with the History of Photography journal and the Journal18 series.
