Nicholas E. Cronk is Professor of European Enlightenment Studies at the University of Oxford and Director of the Voltaire Foundation. He is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Lecturer in the History of the Book, and affiliated with St Edmund Hall. Additionally, he serves as Chercheur associé at ITEM (CNRS/ENS), Pôle « Écritures des Lumières », and President of the Société des études voltairiennes.
His research encompasses Voltaire's complete works—including historical writings, correspondence, poetry, Lettres philosophiques, and Questions sur l’Encyclopédie—alongside broader French Enlightenment scholarship, history of the book (particularly illustrated editions), and textual criticism methodologies.
Professor Cronk has received prestigious French honors recognizing scholarly contributions:
- Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knights of the Order of Arts and Letters)
- Officier dans l’ordre des Palmes académiques (Officer of the Order of Academic Palms)
As Director of the Voltaire Foundation, he leads major editorial projects including the Complete Works of Voltaire and coordinates international Enlightenment research initiatives.
