Siwei Cheng is an Associate Professor of Sociology at New York University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Science. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and Public Policy from the University of Michigan (2015), an M.A. in Statistics from the same institution (2012), and dual B.A. degrees in Economics and Mathematical Statistics from Peking University (2009). Prior to NYU, she was an Assistant Professor at UCLA (2015–2016).
Her research focuses on social stratification, inequality, mobility, and quantitative methodologies. Key areas include labor markets, life course trajectories, and interdisciplinary approaches combining machine learning with causal inference. She is a William T. Grant Scholar (2023–2028), supporting her work on community connectedness and mobility.

- MapJob: Analyzing job structure networks using Census and job posting data.
- C&C Project: Examining human mobility and community resource access.
- Social Dynamics through Images: Using AI to study public space interactions.
- Path2Pub: Analyzing publication bias in social science conferences.
Teaching includes graduate and undergraduate courses on statistics, social stratification, and research methods. She co-developed the NYC Kindergarten Admission Lottery Simulator, a free educational tool for school admission analysis.
Selected awards include recognition for innovative research methodologies and contributions to understanding inequality dynamics. Grants include funding from the Russell Sage Foundation and the Washington Center for Equitable Growth.
