Sarah Iverson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at American University. She holds affiliations as a Global Research Fellow with the Sustainable Procurement Research Initiative at Kogod Business School and as a Faculty Affiliate with both the Antiracist Research and Policy Center and the Center for Health, Risk, and Society.
She earned her Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.A. in Sociology from New York University, and a B.A. in Sociology from Smith College.
Her research examines racial inequality through institutional meaning-making processes, with specific focus areas including: organizational dynamics in community health settings; racial classification in U.S. census practices; multiracial identity formation; sustainable procurement decisions; and college admissions policies post-affirmative action. Methodologically, she employs ethnographic approaches to study how institutions perpetuate or combat inequality.
Her publications demonstrate consistent themes around racial disparities, organizational behavior, and social policy. Recent work explores intersections of race with college admissions, procurement practices, and census data collection, while earlier scholarship analyzed education policy, behavioral health systems, and criminal justice reforms.
