Sivane Hirsch is a Full Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning Studies at Laval University's Faculty of Education. She is affiliated with the Interuniversity Research Centre on Teacher Training and the Teaching Profession (CRIFPE-Laval) and collaborates with researchers from University of Montreal, University of Sherbrooke, and University of Quebec at Montreal on multiple research projects.
Professor Hirsch's research focuses on teaching sensitive topics in education, ethnocultural and religious diversity in Quebec schools, racism and genocide studies, sociology and ethics education, and Quebec culture and citizenship programs. Her work examines how to address challenging historical and social issues in classroom settings while promoting understanding and social cohesion through knowledge-based approaches that respect diverse perspectives.
Her recent publications (2021-2023) show consistent output across multiple journals and edited collections, with particular emphasis on teaching the genocide of First Peoples in Canada, religious diversity education, and regional approaches to understanding diversity in Quebec schools. Her work spans both theoretical contributions and practical teaching resources.
Professor Hirsch leads multiple funded research projects including a SSHRC Knowledge grant (2021-2026) on Hasidic community education and a SSHRC Knowledge Development grant (until April 2024) on addressing sensitive topics in secondary school. She has also developed practical teaching guides on sensitive topics and cultural appropriation with the Centre for Educational Intervention in Diverse Contexts.
She teaches undergraduate courses including Didactics of Quebec Culture and Citizenship (DID-2050, 2060, 2061) and Elements of Sociology for Teaching (ENS-1005), and graduate courses on Quebec Culture and Citizenship didactics (DID-6113-6115) and a Doctoral Seminar on Critical Reflections on Research (EDC-8002).
