Sissi Liu is a Presidential Research Fellow in Theatre and Performance at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY), specializing in modern and contemporary performance with focus on race, sexuality, and gender in U.S. American and East Asian cultural production across theatre, music, dance, fashion, graphic novels, and digital art.
Her research centers on decolonial frameworks like “Wukongism” or “Shapeshifter Consciousness” for analyzing Asian/American performance, alongside current investigations into queer and minoritarian fashion. Key areas include Theatre and Performance, Race/Gender/Sexuality Studies, Asian American Studies, Fashion Studies, and Digital Media.

Dr. Liu has published in Studies in Musical Theatre, Asian Theatre Journal, and Performance and Spirituality, plus book contributions to iBroadway: Musical Theatre in the Digital Age (2017) and The Routledge Handbook of Asian Theatre (2016). She organized events including “Performing Minoritarian and Queer Fashion” (2018), “Popular Avant-garde: Revolutionary Jazz-Influenced Music” (2017), and “Challenging Assumptions in Performance” (2017).
