Simon Usherwood is a Professor of Politics & International Studies at the University of Surrey, Department of Politics. He serves as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Britain and Europe. His research focuses on Euroscepticism, UK-EU relations, and the pedagogical use of active learning simulations. He previously held roles including Deputy Director of the ESRC’s 'UK in a Changing Europe' programme (2017-2019) and is Chair-elect of UACES (2021-2023). His work contributes to policy debates on Brexit and EU-UK relations through evidence-based analysis.
Usherwood’s teaching emphasizes innovative methods such as flipped classrooms and simulation exercises. He co-leads the Horizon 2020 PROTECT project, studying civil society’s role in migration policy. His publications span EU governance, migration, and Euroscepticism, with notable contributions to Oxford University Press, Routledge, and De Gruyter.
